Becoming a Director

It finally happened. You worked so hard to get to this next level of management, a Director. You’re now in charge of a larger team with responsibilities across the company. This next chapter seems exciting but scary at the same time. As the way we work evolves, a few tried and true methods remain to help you grow into this next level of leadership.
Doubt everything, just not yourself. I cannot stress this enough.

Mentorship

In a recent community discussion, someone asked what advice would you give to first time mentors and mentees to be successful.
General Work out a cadence that is acceptable for both. Refrain from assuming mentors are available often or on a whim. Revisit the relationship periodically. Is it working? Has the goal been achieved? Is it time for the mentee to find another mentor? Be genuinely interested in each other.

The Platform Mindset

A platform is when the economic value of everybody that uses it, exceeds the value of the company that creates it. Then it’s a platform. – Bill Gates
There are moments when a product or company hits a size where they decide to create a platform that current and future products are built upon. The exercise that follows segments the organization, one focusing on the “product” and the other on the “platform.

Peak Performance & Potential

When you turn 30, you won’t be able to do that anymore. At 40, forget it; it’s all downhill from here. It’s too late to start that; you can’t be the best.
I’ve heard this throughout my life. It was never directed at me, almost always self-talk. As you age, your potential diminishes, in particular physically. That decay isn’t as evident with your intelligence until later in life. One massive assumption in this line of self-talk is that you’ve already reached your peak performance.

Everyday Workflow - Serendipity on the Run

Running has given me the space to think. The best moments happen when I suddenly come up with a solution, an idea, or a connection I had not thought of before. These moments often occur while I am listening to a podcast. Listening and reasoning triggered thoughts about the podcast and whatever else was rattling around in my brain. I would immediately stop and jot a note in an Apple Notes.

Future with AI

ChatGPT and LLMs have taken hold in global news. There is so much discussion about how ChatGPT can be used for everything. Concerns about job losses. Fear about how AI can be used for nefarious reasons. The need for regulation to control bad actors. Every company is pivoting to be an “AI” company. While there is a lot of hype, we’re still in a nascent phase of AI. Much will be thrown away, but I’m looking forward to a few particular future possibilities.

Framework for Fitness

There isn’t a day that goes by without a new fitness regimen that will help make you stronger, live longer, and have six-pack abs. Nutritional advice that pushes ketogenic diets, fasting, meat only, vegan only. Even though there are merits to these tactics, they can be highly confusing, if not overwhelming. Over the years, I’ve dug deeper into the advice and compressed them into simple ideas for myself.
Stick with it 80% of the time.

Collected Wisdom

Over the years, I’ve tried to capture the lessons I’ve incorporated into my life. Some of these are from books, industry leaders, peers, or distilled from my own experiences. This is an unordered running list I’ll continually expand for years.
Give it five minutes from Jason Fried. Before debating someone’s ideas, allow yourself to think about the idea for a few minutes.
Make it better. In the same vein as giving it five minutes, look for ways to improve ideas.

Echos in the mind

I have voices in my mind.
Until I was 20, I used an inhaler to battle my asthma. From cat allergies to walking up a flight of stairs would end with a puff from the inhaler. Now, my asthma itself was not that bad. I could play tennis, basketball, or ride bikes without an issue. I became used to using the inhaler anytime it was challenging to breathe. I knew I didn’t need it as often, but I couldn’t stop myself.
